The ACTION Project
AIDS Care and Treatment in Nigeria, the ACTION Project,
implements HIV and AIDS care, treatment, and prevention
through a United States Government funded program to
assist those affected and infected by HIV in 15 countries
around the world, including Nigeria.
The fight against HIV/AIDS requires coordination and
support of many. The ACTION Project works closely with
Nigeria’s National Action Committee on AIDS and
the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure harmony with
the national HIV treatment guidelines and programs.
The goals for Nigeria by the end of 2008 are to:
- care for 1.8 million HIV-infected individuals and
AIDS orphans
- treat 350,000 HIV-infected people with antiretroviral
therapy
- prevent 1.2 million new infections (60% of projected
new infections)

Background on Nigeria and the HIV Epidemic
In Nigeria, the rate of HIV infection in the general
population is 1 out of every 20 persons, meaning that
more than 3.8 million Nigerians are currently living
with HIV/AIDS. However, surveys among some high risk
groups, such as commercial sex workers or prostitutes,
have found infection rates in 1 out of every 2 persons.
Consequently, among those already infected, it is estimated
that more than one million have clinical signs and symptoms
of AIDS. Currently, only some HIV-infected Nigerians
benefit from antiretroviral treatments. If not treated
for HIV/AIDS, a poorer quality of life and shorter life
span is expected.
What
YOU Can Do?
You likely know someone who has been affected or infected
by HIV/AIDS. Treatment and care provide hope for those
who are infected. If you are infected, please seek care
and treatment, and do your part to prevent loved ones
from becoming infected. If you are not infected, you
can protect yourself.
Be aware! Be compassionate! Fight stigma for
a brighter future!

The ACTION Project:
The ACTION Project emphasizes the integration of laboratory
staff, clinicians, and care providers. The team is trained
to provide the best in HIV care and treatment.
These options focus on providing sustained and comprehensive
HIV care, provision of antiretroviral therapy, and development
of patient support activities.
ACTION also emphasizes the need for patients to adhere
to instructions for taking antiretroviral medications.
The project relies on partnerships within the networks
of care already present throughout Nigeria and is anchored
by regional centers of excellence. |
